Word came to him that the godlings had dithered around enough. It was time for them to go home and get on with it. Right! Nigel had his orders and he was nothing if not efficient.

He took the initiative to put into play Evacuation Protocol #57. Everything in his guests' rooms suddenly ceased to work. Lights went out. Televisions and computers turned off on their own. Even the water taps stopped functioning, and all of it suddenly. If they were outside of their room their key no longer opened doors, except for those of the elevator bay and then the elevators would take them only to the lobby.

He straightening the cap on his head, smoothed the lapels of his jacket then brushed imaginary lint from his sleeves. He was prepared for the ensuing confrontations.

"It's been... thought-provoking," Ariadne answered. Certainly the shortest time I've ever spent in a hotel. Why even assign us rooms if we're not even going to stay overnight?" She shook her head.

"Anyway. How about yourself?"

"It's been an evening I won't soon forget," Gawain answered, deciding to remain quiet about his earlier conversations for the moment.

"But at any rate, I'm pleased to get to be with you again before we get sent back to our respective hometowns. At least I hope we will get sent back to the correct places."

"I wholeheartedly agree," Ariadne said, "On all counts."

"Actually, Ariadne," he said, "I was wondering if you would be interested in spending some time together when we get back? I'm always happy to welcome visitors from out-of-town to my bookstore, and I'm also always happy for a trip to Washington."

"Actually... Yeah. That'd be nice. I don't have a lot of vacation time right now, but if you get the chance to come up, you can sure stop by. Assuming, of course, we even get back to the right place," she said.

"Even if we did, goddesses forbid, end up in the wrong places," he said, "We both know a little something about navigating labyrinths."

"We do. But it still helps to have a ball of yarn or a piece of chalk with you when you go in," she said, grinning.

"Maybe Sif would lend us some of her cookie crumbs for finding our way home?" he suggested, twinkling.

"Ah, but what if the little birds eat them? It'd be more prudent to use shiny stones. Maybe Aphrodite can spare us some of those gems she was wearing earlier," Ariadne teased.

"Sadly, she doesn't appear to be wearing much at the moment," Gawain observed. "Well, I shouldn't say that makes me sad ... but it doesn't really help our cause."

"Well, it is Aphrodite. All things considered, it's not that surprising," Ariadne said.

"But, with luck, we won't be lost at all. We'll know right where we are, and where we're going."
