Winter is putting footsteps in the meadow

She found little amusement in her forced choice of clothing. However, after much diligence she'd discovered something that she felt was passable. Feathers after all were a fraction more reliable than spider webbing.

And with her ill mood she'd taken herself away from the main house and come to the gardens. It was warm and bright and the flowers were in bloom. It did nothing to improve her temperament. In fact, the air in the small, almost secluded corner she'd come to, turned decidedly cooler, and the grass beneath her bare feet began sparkling with frost. She could admit quietly to herself that she reached out to coat a vibrant red rose in crystal clear ice purely out of spite, small as the revenge might be.

She was deeply touched by that statement. Touched and made a bit giddy. A feeling she hadn't experienced in well... years. Could he tell?

"I'm...glad I meet your approval." There was no sarcasm, not even a trace.

He smiles, genuinely. "You're welcome. I'm glad for the opportunity." He shakes his head and chuckles. "I must sound incredibly sappy."

She did not laugh, though she also didn't look unhappy. "No, not really."

"Mab..I don't presume anything from this. I'll continue to serve our cause faithfully and still provide as much snark as you'd like, but..it felt good to get that in the open."

She felt a twinge of disappointment, and it passed over her features briefly before she contained it behind a mask of mild amusement. "Well, they do say confession is good for the soul. Anything else you wish to unburden yourself of?"

"Yes," Bres admitted. "Respectfully, and I mean that, I've been very interested in you for some time now..and not in the platonic way. ..as my superior I'll understand if you want to slap me for my presumption."

She peered at him for a moment. "You are a king, Bres. I am well aware of the fact that the only reason I lead is because the three of you allow it to be so. I have never perceived you to be my lesser." Well, since they were in the mood to be confessing things, she might as well contribute one more.

"And as you can see, I have not slapped you, but continue to hold your hand." And to illustrate, her thumb moves across the back of his hand.

"You also have the ability to lead, Mab."

He does note this, his fingers squeezing hers just a little more. "So you have. ..may I presume then that you are open to the idea of a..closer relationship between us? I promise to still provide you with sarcastic intellectual discourse if you wish."

"You wouldn't be half as attractive without the sarcasm." That...was probably a 'yes'.

That gets him laughing. "Then how is this for sarcasm: Kissing you is the last thing on my mind."

She leaned forward a little, a smirk on her lips. "You are the worst liar."

"I suppose I could live with that." He takes a chance and moves to give her a tame, but passionate kiss.

Well, she had practically dared him to when she'd leaned in. And she couldn't say she was unhappy with the result. She kissed him back in kind.

His hands cup her cheeks as they kiss. This was really happening!? If he woke up and this was a dream, he was going to be pissed.

It might indeed seem like a dream. There they were, dressed like they'd been torn from the pages of some fantasy novel, sitting in the snow in the middle of a wintered rose garden, kissing. It was all rather... romantic. If you'd asked her twenty minutes ago if she thought this was how her afternoon would turn out, she'd have rolled her eyes and walked away scornfully.

They continue this for a time until the need for oxygen finally becomes too much and they are forced to part.

"Well..that was..sublime."

Her breathing was a little fast, and to pass it off as purely because of a need for oxygen would be rather ridiculous at this point. She nodded. "Indeed. Better than I'd imagined, in fact."

"You've imagined this, Mab?" He asked, delighted at the idea.

The endorphins must be getting to her, as she had not intended to reveal that. But, too late to take it back now. "I didn't throw myself at you that first time because I found you undesirable. My perception of you has changed little since then."

"Well, for the record, you were very desirable yourself."

"But not quite enough for you." She didn't seem offended by that fact.

"Only because I wanted to know the mind behind the undoubtedly stunning body," he half-teased. "I am very selective about the women I share a bed with. ..not that I'm implying that that is where this is going." He looks at her seriously. "Where is this going, Mab?"

"I am not against the idea of being your lover." Just the opposite in fact. "Is there more you desire?"

"I've never had a real relationship in my life. Every woman I've been with I've always been forthright with them from the start. I'm not asking for a permanent bonding from you either..but I am very fond of you. Despite my earlier..snit, I would not begrudge you seeing other men if you so wanted, but.." He looks her in the eye. "I would very much like to be your lover, but I also value you as a comrade..and even a friend," he confesses almost shyly. "I just wanted you to know that." He chuckles nervously. "I'll need to come up with a good one-liner after that much fluff."

"It's hardly bad for one's ego to see a man jealous over her." She was most definitely smiling a little about that. "But your expectations mirror my own. I have no desire to tie you down."
