Anubis smirked to himself as he typed 'Knock Knock' and sent the text to Hanuman. He pocketed his cell phone and knocked on Hanuman's door. Anubis should have been in LA, getting ready for the new semester of school to start. This would be very unexpected.

The door opened just as Anubis' phone gave a chirp to signal a returned text message. More attention-grabbing, though, was the expression on the face of the young man who had opened the door. Hanuman stood there in a pair of tatty jeans and a gobsmacked look and nothing else. "Mason?" he finally managed. "Dude! Why didn't you warn me you were coming?"

Leaning forward, he wrapped his arms around the other young man for a tight hug.

Anubis felt his phone vibrate in his pocket and he heard the phone chirp and the door unlocking at the same time. "Hey!", he greeted, an amused tone in his voice. Javi did look surprised, and obviously not expecting company. Mason returned the hug, embracing him tightly and giving him a pat on the back. "Surprise!", he said, letting go.

"I'll say! Geez, man." Hanuman's grin threatened to split his face. "Seriously, why didn't you warn me? When did you get into town?"

"It was a surprise", Anubis reiterated coyly when asked why he didn't warned him. He grinned mischievously when asked how long he'd been in town. "For about ten or fifteen minutes."

"It's a great surprise," Hanuman insisted. "You know you're always welcome here. It's been a while!"

"Yeah it has been a while." Anubis gave him a warm smile. "Me being here isn't the only surprise. But you'll have to come with me for the other part of it."

"Oh, yeah? Are you going to lead me astray or something?"

"I'll lead you somewhere", Mason teased.

"That sounds pretty interesting to me." Hanuman took a step backwards further into the house and lifted his hands vaguely. "Is it gonna be a no shirt, no shoes, no service place that you're leading me to?"

Mason laughed a little nervously, feeling flustered for a moment. He felt better when Javi started discussing the benefits of what Mason could do. "I know, right? That's what I've been doing, visiting a few more cemetaries, trying to get more of a range. I can come out any time, or bring you out to see me... or whatever." He gave a casual shrug of his shoulders.

"Whatever. Totally whatever." Javi rolled his shoulders back and tucked his hands in his back pockets before pivoting on his heel and surveying the tombstones around them once more. "So did you spend a lot of time here when you were in high school?"

The way he asked it held only pure curiosity. There was not a single ounce of judgement or condemnation in his words.

"As a kid in general, yeah. It's peaceful, quiet... Just always felt... comfortable here. I liked the sense of history, would wonder about the lives that the people in here led. Guess I was always more interested in the dead than the living."

"Is that still the case now?" Javi waited for a moment but didn't seem to require an answer if Mason wasn't up for it as he looked towards the scenery again. "It really is kinda pretty here. Tranquil. Serene. Quiet."

Mason smiled. "Sometimes. Though I've definitely met some more interesting people recently." Mason looked from Javi down to the ground to a moment, then looked up over the cemetery. "Yeah, it is. I like L.A., but sometimes I do miss it here a little bit."

"But now you can visit here any time you want to," Javi pointed out reasonably, "and it won't cost you an arm and a leg."

"Yeah, I can. I can visit here, can visit you... Lets of stuff I can do now. Speaking of, anywhere else you want to go?"

"Man, I don't know." Javi lifted his hands and laced them behind his head, stretching idly and again turning in a slow circle as he surveyed the flat landscape, so different than what he was used to. "Everywhere. Anywhere. I'm easy, man. There's so much out there that I haven't seen. I almost wish I could do the monkey thing again and just walk over entire mountains and stuff. Total seven league boots moments."

He glanced at his friend. "Where do you want to go? What do you want to do?"

Mason gave Javi an appreciative smile, leaning into the warm physical contact. "Thanks, man. Same goes for you. Though I'm not really worried. At least not for myself, anyway."

"Yeah, we'll do our best to stay out of trouble. I think we can manage that. Don't you?"

"Yeah, I think so." He gave Javi a smile. "So, you wanna walk around a bit? There's not much here, the area's pretty desolate, though it is one hell of a view. There's a little stream closeby, comes right off the mountain, water's ice cold."

"Hey, that sounds like fun." Javi released the other man and took a step away though he was not entirely sure where the stream would be. "If you don't mind, I'd love to see it. Anyway, it'll be good to walk like a normal person for a bit. Not that I don't love your trick but it's going to take some getting used to."

"It feels different taking someone with rather than going on my own. It's hard to explain... kinda like heavier lifting, I guess. A little more strain, just for a few moments. Already feeling better." Mason walked them toward an old iron gate that was the graveyard entrance. Beyond was a worn road, some trees and brush. "There's a trail that goes off the road, leads to the river", Mason explained. "Just found it the other day. Guess you can see why I haven't totally been in the back to school mood."

"Because you've been playing hooky." Javi's laughter echoed in the stillness as he followed Mason. He looked around with increasing appreciation and drew deep, full breaths of the crisp air. He matched steps with Mason without much thought; his body tended to do that, he noticed, synch up with his companions. He smiled a bit vaguely. "I don't blame you, though."

Mason smiled sheepishly. "Yeah... Not that I'm gonna ditch school or anything. I still want to do it. But my world's suddenly a lot bigger than it was last fall when I started college."

"Yeah, I hear you." Javi's smile grew and he leaned over to bump shoulders with the other young man. "It's gotten huge... But really interesting, too. I'm not going to complain. It feels right to be me and I'm really glad to have met everyone. Sita and Kali and you. You're all great."
